Enhance Kitchen Safety: 5 Tips for Maintaining Gas Regulators at Home

Using gas stoves has become a daily routine for both household and business needs. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that in 2023, the majority of Indonesian households (86,91%) use gas fuel for cooking. The types of gas used include 5.5 kg LPG, 3 kg LPG, and city gas or biogas.

One crucial component in the use of LPG cylinders and gas stoves is the gas regulator. However, according to the Research and Development (R&D) expert team at Destec Indonesia, most people still lack awareness of the importance of maintaining gas regulators in comparison with maintaining gas stoves. In fact, gas regulators play an essential role in ensuring the safe use of gas stoves.

Senior RND Design Specialist, Topan Handrian, shares some tips for safely maintaining gas regulators in your home:

1. Proper Placement of Gas Regulators

The first step in maintaining a regulator is storing the gas cylinder and regulator in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, and heat sources. However, in certain conditions, such as during the rainy season when the air tends to be humid, it is advisable to use regulators made from Zinc Alloy. This material is more resistant to corrosion, making it suitable for use in humid and hot environments.

Additionally, ensure that the storage area has good ventilation to prevent gas buildup.

2. Safe Handling

Always handle the regulator with care. Avoid dropping or knocking the regulator, as this can cause damage. When not in use, cover the regulator to protect it from dust and dirt. Additionally, avoid regulator modification that can lead to the harmness of regulator function.

3. Regular Cleaning

Regulators are prone to splashes from cooking ingredients such as water and oil, which can cause corrosion and rust on the regulator's exterior. Regular cleaning, ideally every time you change the gas cylinder, can prevent this. Use a damp cloth to clean all parts of the regulator and then dry it thoroughly.

4. Proper Installation

When the gas cylinder is empty, follow the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer. Improper installation can cause damage and reduce the regulator's lifespan.

Each gas regulator product generally comes with clear installation instructions. For example, if you are using the COM or Des Star regulators, during installation, secure the regulator by turning the knob lock until it is firmly attached to the gas cylinder. On the other hand, if you are using the Star Cam model, the regulator can be installed simply by fully inserting and pushing the C Plate, followed by pressing the lever lock, ensuring that the regulator is securely and firmly in place.

5. Safety Check

The next maintenance tip is to check the functionality of the gas regulator to avoid accidents caused by a faulty regulator. This check can be performed every morning before starting to cook. Some things to look out for include checking for the smell of gas when you turn it on. A gas odor can indicate a gas leak from the regulator or the gas cylinder.

Additionally, safety checks can be done by ensuring that the gas stove flame lights up normally. If the flame appears to sputter or is irregular when igniting the stove, this may indicate an issue with the gas regulator. If this occurs, it is recommended that the regulator be replaced to ensure safety.

By following these five tips, you can extend the lifespan of your gas regulator and reduce the potential for accidents. Have you been implementing these gas regulator maintenance tips so far? If not, you can start applying them now.
