Why Destec Regulators Have a Side Spindle Hole?

Most people are familiar with the spindle hole found on gas regulators, from budget models to premium ones. It is a component that every regulator must have.

Most regulators use a dynamic spindle. This means the spindle moves to release gas from the cylinder by pressing the pin on the cylinder valve. This helps gas flow from the cylinder to the stove more smoothly.

What Is a Spindle Hole?

Before going further, it helps to know what a spindle hole is. It is the part of the regulator that presses the valve on the gas cylinder so that gas can flow in and out.

The flow of gas is not controlled by the spindle. It is controlled by the diaphragm mechanism inside the regulator (the rubber membrane and its supporting parts). The spindle only releases gas from the cylinder and acts as the inlet into the regulator.

Static vs Dynamic Spindle

As explained above, the spindle carries gas from the cylinder to the regulator, and then on to the stove. There are two main types: static and dynamic.

The two work quite differently. A static spindle presses the cylinder valve faster, because it does the pressing directly, without help from other parts of the regulator.

A dynamic spindle works differently. When the regulator is attached, the spindle does not press the valve pin right away. You need an extra step: turn the clip on the regulator to press the pin and let the gas flow.

Why a Static Spindle Is Better

There are several reasons why a static spindle is a better choice than a dynamic one:

• Better durability. A dynamic spindle can wear out faster because brass is used on the part that presses the valve. A static spindle uses the same material as the rest of the regulator, so it holds up longer.

• More efficient gas use. A static spindle moves gas from the cylinder to the regulator, and then to the stove, more effectively. This lets you use up the gas in the cylinder.

• Consistent gas pressure. Gas pressure is controlled by the diaphragm mechanism, not the spindle. A static spindle also has fewer parts and no moving mechanism, so it lasts longer and is less likely to jam.
