Anticipating Gas Leaks, Know 4 Signs of a Faulty Gas Regulator

When reading news about gas cylinder or stove explosions, the use of faulty gas regulators is often assumed to be one of the causes. Therefore, regular maintenance of gas regulators is essential. To minimize unforeseen external factors, it is important to recognize the signs of a damaged gas regulator.

According to the Research and Development (R&D) team of Destec Indonesia, if there is any damage to the regulator, avoid repairing it yourself as it may lead to unwanted risks. It is recommended to replace the regulator to ensure safety at home.

Senior RND Design Specialist Destec Indonesia, Topan Handrian shared several signs of a faulty gas regulator to be aware of:

  1. Gas Odor

One of the signs of damage to a gas regulator is the smell of gas when the stove is not in use. This may indicate a gas leak caused by a faulty locking system in the regulator. To ensure durability and safety, it is advisable to choose a regulator with a strong locking system. Always follow the installation instructions provided by the manufacturer.

For instance, when using the Star Cam regulator, installation is as simple as securely inserting and pushing the C-Plate, followed by pressing the locking lever. This ensures the regulator is properly and securely attached.

  1. Unstable Stove Flame

Another sign is when the stove flame fluctuates irregularly—burning either too large or too small. If the flame is inconsistent and appears red or orange (as normal flames are typically blue), it indicates uneven gas pressure from the regulator.

  1. Sudden Flame Outages

If the stove flame suddenly goes out while in use, it is another sign of regulator damage. If this occurs frequently, it is recommended that the gas regulator be replaced immediately. This issue may be caused by a malfunctioning regulator or a blockage in the gas regulator line.

When selecting a regulator, choose one that has undergone a comprehensive and periodic production process monitored by a dual-quality control system. For instance, all regulators under the Destec brand have undergone a thorough production monitoring process (Quality Assurance/QA) and evaluation of all components, including the final product (Quality Control/QC).

  1. Hissing Sound Accompanied by Gas Odor

A persistent hissing sound from the regulator, when the stove is not in use, could indicate a leak or malfunction in the device. Suppose the hissing continues and is accompanied by a gas odor. In that case, it is likely due to damage or a failure in one of the regulator’s internal components, such as a faulty diaphragm.

However, it is normal to hear a slight hissing sound when first attaching the regulator to the gas cylinder. This is due to the gas pressure adjusting and usually stops after a short period. Additionally, a faint hissing sound may be heard when turning the stove on, as the gas flows through the regulator to the stove, which is a normal occurrence.
