Circulation of Modified Used Gas Regulators: A Hidden Threat to Consumer Safety
Gas regulators are a crucial component in cooking activities, whether for household use or in the culinary business. However, there is still a widespread presence of modified used Destec gas regulators being sold in the market, especially on e-commerce platforms. The Research and Development (R&D) team at Destec Indonesia strongly warns not use modified regulators, as these products may pose safety risks and long-term disadvantages for consumers.
Abdul Kahar, Technical Director of Destec Indonesia, explained several dangers and consequences of using modified used gas regulators. First, warranty claims are not valid for modified products due to alterations made to the original unit. As a result, if there are issues with the product or during its use, consumers are not entitled to claim warranty.
“Second, if modifications are made without adhering to safety standards, the regulator can pose a danger to the users,” added Abdul (26/05) in Tangerang.
This happens because the brand owners cannot verify whether the modified product has passed the proper quality testing. Consequently, these altered regulators are more prone to damage, such as gas leakage or malfunction. From a safety perspective, modified products also lack a clear manufacturing standard, making them risky for consumers.
Furthermore, Abdul shared several tips to help consumers identify modified used gas regulators and avoid them. He recommends that buyers first familiarize themselves with the features and specifications of official new regulators. Then, they can verify authenticity using the following steps:
Check for the hologram sticker
The first step is to ensure the presence of an official hologram sticker on the regulator. For instance, original regulators such as Star Cam, COM, or Des Star carry a QC Destec hologram sticker on the upper part of the regulator. Meanwhile, modified products typically have a generic sticker that simply says "original," without the QC Destec label.Modified features
Modified used regulators often have certain features altered by the sellers. According to Abdul, one of the most commonly modified parts is the meter or pressure gauge, which is used to measure the pressure or remaining gas in the cylinder. On genuine and brand-new Destec regulators, the Destec logo is present on the pressure gauge. In contrast, modified products usually do not have this logo. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all features match the original product. Consumers can verify this by comparing the product’s images and specifications on the official website or social media of the brand.
Check the product description
When buying gas regulators on e-commerce platforms, it is strongly advised to carefully read the product descriptions. Some sellers provide information indicating that the regulators they offer are used items that have been modified. If you come across such descriptions, it is best to avoid purchasing them to minimize safety risks.
The Destec R&D team encourages consumers to choose only new and original gas regulators, as these have undergone strict quality and safety testing. Avoid products that only rely on low prices or imitate official brands, as they may not meet safety standards and could pose long-term hazards for users.
