Make Your Kitchen Safer: 5 Common Gas Regulator Myths You Need to Know
Gas regulators play a crucial role in maintaining safety in the kitchen, which is why understanding how they work is essential. Unfortunately, many myths surrounding gas regulators continue to circulate and often lead to misunderstandings. These misconceptions can cause users to make the wrong decisions and potentially compromise kitchen safety.
The Research and Development (R&D) Team at Destec Indonesia shares several common myths and facts about gas regulators that every household should know.
1. A damaged regulator seal can still be modified
The rubber seal on a regulator, which prevents leaks at the connection between the regulator and the gas cylinder valve, can wear out over time. However, many misleading tips suggest “fixing” a damaged seal by soaking it in cooking oil and reusing it. This practice is completely unsafe and can increase the risk of gas leakage, making it highly discouraged. When the regulator’s rubber seal is damaged, replacing it is the safest option.
2. A gas odor always means the regulator is leaking
A gas smell in your home does not always indicate a regulator leak. Gas leakage can originate from several points, including the cylinder seal, hose connections, the hose itself, or parts of the stove. If you smell gas, immediately turn off the stove, open ventilation, and inspect all components—from the cylinder valve and hose connections to the stove area—to identify the source before taking further action.
3. Checking regulator leaks with soapy water is enough
Testing for leaks with soapy water cannot detect internal regulator damage or issues with the cylinder valve that are not visible from the outside. Soapy water only works for exposed surfaces. Therefore, proper LPG leak inspection requires a more thorough check: ensuring the regulator is installed correctly, inspecting the cylinder seal, checking the hose condition, and making sure no parts are worn out or loose to maintain LPG safety.
4. Using a candle to detect regulator leaks is safe
Using a candle to detect regulator leaks is extremely dangerous because LPG is highly flammable, and the open flame can trigger an explosion. Although it may seem simple, this method is unsafe and should never be attempted. The correct approach is to turn off the stove, improve ventilation, and inspect the regulator installation, hose condition, and cylinder connections safely—without any open flames.
5. Regulators do not need to be replaced as long as they can be attached
A regulator that can still be attached to the gas cylinder is not necessarily safe. Internal components such as valves, rubber parts, and springs may wear out over time without showing external signs. Long-term use can also affect pressure stability and the locking mechanism, especially when exposed to heat, humidity, or dirt. For a truly safe gas regulator, it should be replaced regularly, ideally every 3–5 years, to prevent undetected leaks and ensure reliable performance.
In addition to understanding common myths to avoid unsafe decisions, users must also perform regular maintenance to keep their regulators safe and long-lasting. This includes placing the regulator in a dry area away from heat sources, avoiding impact or drops, cleaning it periodically, installing it according to instructions, and conducting routine safety checks. With proper understanding and consistent care, users can cook safely and confidently without worrying about gas leaks.
